Piccadilly Circus Circus
Street Furniture's musical director Peter Morris & composer Mieko Shimizu spent most of the summer of 2012 on the Cultural Olympiad commission celebrating London 2012 by composing, recording and mixing for an extraordinary event, Piccadilly Circus Circus. This ambitious event with a festival of contemporary circus performers from all over the world demanded a equally adventurous score incorporating a broad spectrum of musical instrumentation. Outstanding musicians like Arun Ghosh on Clarinet, Corey Manba on Vibraphones, Ahmad Dayes on trombone, Jim Lynch on trumpet, Liz Chi Yen Liew & Sarah Chi Shang Liew both on violin & Chinese stringed instruments the erhu & jinghu and Mieko on vocals, piano, flute, accordion, percussion and programming bringing it all together to produce a rich, layered electronica of world and classical music.
Over the course of one magical day, Street Furniture's music echoed over 12 astoundingly different stages 48 different circus acts with 247 performers wowed audiences of 250,000 with truly spectacular shows, along the entire length of Regents down to the Mall and along Piccadilly itself the streets were brought to life and the iconic landmarks became the playground of the World’s most exciting contemporary circus performers.
The day culminated at sunset with a dramatic aerial finale by Stuio Cirque in Piccadilly Circus. London's skyline was transformed in an unforgettable way as Angels, who were granted a 24 hours parole from heaven, were gradually drawn down to the Earth. They then began to shed their wings, and feathers fell on the unsuspecting spectators below, filling the Circus knee deep in feathers.
Piccadilly Circus Circus was presented by the Mayor of London and The London 2012 Festival. Conceived and created by Crying Out Loud. Curated by Co-Artistic Directors Rachel Clare and Aletta Collins. Original music composed by Street Furniture Music,
